Page 1 of 2 In 2008 the main summer’s St. Petersburg festival “Stereoleto” came off in 3 cities: home St. Petersburg, Moscow and Ekaterinburg. The festival’s line-up differed from city to city, but notwithstanding it, “”Stereoleto” as always did gladden public by the excellent choice of artists. On the 11th of June the first session, «Stereo In», was opened on the Elagin Island in St. Petersburg. The dark crowns of trees, the meadows and the ponds of the St. Petersburg Central Park of Culture and Reposal created ineffably mysterious and solemn atmosphere of the main night of the festival. The Light Music company made acquainted public with Portuguese inventors of burning mix of angolan ethnic music «kuduru», hip-hop, dub-step and electronics - Buraka Som Sistema. Along with them on the main scene of the festival the famous virtuosic musician from France Sebastien Tellier and finnish electro-minimalists Star You Star Me set their shows.
But the most important for many became the appearance of the best trip-hop band ever, MASSIVE ATTACK, attending St. Pete in the very beginning of their European tour. Their two-hour performance hit absolutely everyone of those who came that night on the festival and, with bated breath, was first listening to the demonic whisper of 3D and then to the rich vocals of the flamboyant singers Stephanie Jo Dosen and Deborah Miller. The news about the arrival of the Bristolian geniuses were thrilling St. Petersburg for three months. Even the rain, which by a miracle was over toward the evening, couldn’t bring anyone to miss the live show of the supreme electronic group. The hierurgy that has been served by Massive Attack on stage compensated the durable expectation and accumulated impatience of the public. MA played around eight new songs, alternating them mostly by "Mezzanine" tracks. With favourite hits «Angel», «Mezzanine», «Safe from harm» and «Teardrop» the public was put in a blissful trance. On the electrical panels of backdrop the pour of letterings ran and in it’s flashing and fore darkness the faces of the performers were indiscernible, and that also accented the mysticism of the happening. The «Light Music» company as always chose the most interesting russian artists to play in the course of the festival: the best Russian down-tempo group Rekevin, the “picked nu-jazz team of Russia” Moonglow, the St.Pete apologists of the Bristolian sound Half Dub Theory, the breakthrough of the club season Style Kings, who played on the smaller scene of the festival (the White Yard). On the 21st of June the festival continued in Lenexpo by the “Stereo Out” session. That night on the Finnish gulf coast Mr.Scruff – the pearl of the Ninja Tune lable from Great Britain, impetuous Germano- Japanese funk-merry fellows Torpedo Boyz and the audacious headliners of many European festivals The Go!Team were playing, and the latter mixed in their music soundtracks to nonexistent action movies, outcries of some cheerleading squads, the guitar licks and the old-school “hip-hop”. During the second session Russia was performed by the favourites of the exacting public The Krolls, the romantic techno-jazz-man Mujuice, dashing rock’n’rollers The Tiger Cubes, coming Dsh-Dsh and the Illuminated Faces. In Moscow “Stereoleto” reigned on the popular scene of the “Winzavod” Moscow Contemporary Art Center. It was the third time in 2008 that the festival was set in the capital of the country! On the 20th of June Moscow saw and heard Mr.Scruff, The Go!Team and Torpedo Boyz! On the 5th of July “Stereoleto” for the first time ran in Еkaterinburg. The capital of Ural was meeting the headliners of the festival – the British trio Red Snapper. In 2008 Red Snapper has already appeared on the Winter Session of Stereoleto in St. Petersburg, and here came a golden opportunity for the ekaterinburgers to hear the virtuosic musicians, synthesizing jazz, electronics, ska and hip-hop. The assistance to Red Snapper was rendered by the Moscovites Dsh-Dsh, the Permians DOS BURATINOS", Novosibirsk’s "PROJECT AEROPLANE" and Ekaterinburg’s band "Stereotypes".
