Page 1 of 4 On the 23rd of April in Manege Kadetskogo korpusa appeared the “Founding Fathers” of the industrial, the legendary German group “Einsturzende Neubauten”. They are still in the forefront of modern alternative. Twenty years have already elapsed since they discovered a new musical trend, but today they are not going to wind down or rest on oars. In St. Petersburg the “Autolytic new buildings” delivered their new album “Alles wieder offen”, astounding with alien to the group sound of balanced and soft noise-pop.
“Einsturzende Neubauten” did not just play the concert. It was a real performance, a sensible and carefully crafted one. The classy decoration of he scene, fantastic masters, many of which were invented personally by the musicians, the light, beautiful and right decided with the orange lampshades on hanging cords, almost theatrical lighting of the backdrop, changing from one song to another. And, sure enough, the music – terrifically powerful and profound. Today “EN” are not as disconcertingly rough while choosing the instrumentation as they used to be twenty years ago: there were no saws, rock-drills or cement-mixters on stage, though of coarse it could not get along without sheet iron and pipes. Now the noise symphonies of “Einsturzende Neubauten” became tenderer, the rumble of the electrical drill machines made way to rustle of polythene and the knock of steel sticks. During the two odd hours, for which the performance lasted, the group showed not only a coherent and professional play (despite the four-year interval in performing), but the improvisatorial gift as well. And what worth it was, for example, the little theatrical act, which Blixa with his comates set towards the end of the show, playing forfeits with public and performing the songs set by the spectators. The spontaneous performance of the songs felt like discipline and nearly machine accuracy. That’s him, the genuine Ordnung – the ability to ride out of unpredictable situations with elegance and ease. Blixa Bargeld, the Magister of the noise himself, wearing a tree-piece suite, but barefoot, by fluttering his hands conducted the music, blustering during the two-hour show. The new buildings crash to pieces and then again go up sky-high, and “Einsturzende Neubauten” advance, experiment and move onward.
